SUCCESS CASE
Nazaré is a Portuguese town in the Leiria's district with around 10,300 inhabitants.

The town brings together three old settlements, Pedreneira, Sítio and Praia, and new neighborhoods from the second half of the 20th century.

The difficulties of accessing the site have always conditioned its development. In order to serve the interests of the population and make it easier for pilgrims to reach Senhora da Nazaré, the elevator was built at the end of the 19th century. Considered to be one of the best initiatives in the town's history, it increased the growth of the Sítio and boosted the connection to the beach.
Final project: Nazaré elevator rehabilitation
Sector: Transport
Highlight product: Anybus Wireless Bridge - HMS
Final client: Câmara Municipal da Nazaré
Integrator: Paulo & Castro - Sociedade de Montagens Eléctricas, Lda

In 1963 it was sold to the Nazaré City Council, which became responsible for the use and maintenance of this means of transport. In 2001, the old carriages were replaced by new, more modern, comfortable and safer carriages. However, the systems still needed to be modernized to make them more reliable and safer. The challenge was to make this implementation based on existing mechanical systems.

Several brands were used for the final solution, including Anybus - HMS, Mitsubishi Electric for all the automation and SICK for the main safety functions, recognized worldwide for their highly reliable products and solutions for automation systems.

Two access points and two wireless bridge gateways were placed outside the elevator to ensure communications between the automation systems and the control room. These communication systems guarantee the redundancy of the wireless communication system and thus ensure the transmission of data vital to the operation of the elevator.

The modernization of the communication and automation systems with the old mechanics of the elevator was the great challenge of the whole project, and its completion was a success both for all those involved and for all users and operators in their daily lives.
"This intervention met what we wanted, in other words, it succeeded in achieving the objectives we were aiming for.

We now have a system that is more effective and safer. We have been able to monitor, in real time, what equipment is actually in operation, both in the control system and in the vehicles.

Above all, it is important to say that the process is not closed, but we are at a much higher level than we were a few years ago.”
