SUCCESS CASE

During the 2020-2021 bathing season (in the COVID-19 context), beach crowding and social distancing were two major concerns for both the government and municipalities.

Based on this need, CWAY Wise Solutions developed a solution for counting people at the beach entrances using analytical sensors, which, connected to a smart city platform, allowed them to find out in real time how busy the beaches were and send the status to the totems placed at the beach entrances with the tricolor traffic lights installed. Complying with the APA's (Portuguese Environment Association) instructions, the system used a dedicated API to send the statuses - green, yellow and red - in order to inform holidaymakers.

The system has been designed to be easily implemented on beaches in its entirety, as it is equipped with Victron Energy solar panels, lithium batteries inside with a communication capacity of three days without sun and with a Teltonika RTU240 4G router, which guarantees a reliable connection to the sensor. The Bosch sensor, produced in Ovar, Portugal, is a top-of-the-range device and provides analytical reliability of over 95%. Simple to set up, the solution used analytics to count people at the beaches entrances, connected in real time to a smart city platform on which the capacity was managed and communicated to the Infopraia app and the totems at the entrances with the respective traffic lights.

As well as managing beach capacity, this solution allowed municipalities to have real tourism data and assess the impact of the pandemic. After the bathing season, these sensors will be inserted into the urban environment, in the smart city concept.

With this solution, the municipalities have been able to manage and report on the occupation of their beaches in real time with a very high rate of assertiveness and communicate it to all vacationers, as well as in some cases close accesses beforehand to avoid excesses and guarantee social distancing. This investment in people's safety was not just in the Covid environment, as all the equipment and technology used will be redeployed in an urban environment, working for the quality of life of all residents and visitors to these municipalities.
