Industrial Automation
Color sensor CSS – SICK
The CSS color sensors from SICK combine high color resolution and high-speed color detection in a versatile product range designed for demanding industrial applications.
Both product families support IO-Link, enabling transfer and external storage of up to 24 colors per identification task (job), and can be quickly commissioned using the application-specific setup assistant in SOPAS software.

The CSS High Resolution family enables extremely precise differentiation of even the finest color nuances, color gradients, and structured or inhomogeneous materials such as wood, stone, leather, or textiles. Thanks to its automatic sensing distance regulation, reliable color detection is ensured even with varying object sizes and distances of up to 500 mm. A full-color TFT display visualizes color values (RGB or L*a*b*) as well as color similarity to the taught reference.
The CSS/CSX High Speed family is optimized for applications requiring very fast process speeds, offering a switching frequency of up to 13.8 kHz combined with precise, infinitely adjustable sensitivity. Innovative teach-in procedures allow reliable detection of color gradients and structured materials even at high throughput rates. The switching outputs of the device can be binary coded in “Coded” mode without interfaces, which enables it to output up to 15 colors.

- Up to 24 colors per identification task (job) via IO-Link;
- IO-Link interface;
- Setup assistant via SOPAS software;
- CSX: mechanically and electrically compatible with CS8 sensors.
Advantages
CSS High Resolution:
- Attractive alternative to expensive color measurement solutions thanks to the output of color values and high color resolution;
- Saves resources and increases process flexibility because up to 24 colors per identification task (job) can be transferred via IO-Link or saved;
- Can be used in many applications thanks to the large sensing distance and automatic sensing distance regulation;
- Quick and easy commissioning;
- Display of color values on the sensor display;
- Fast sensor configuration with the help of the SOPAS software.
CSS/CSX High Speed:
- Thanks to the fast object color detection, high process speeds can be achieved, increasing productivity;
- The output of up to 15 colors per binary coding of the switching outputs ensures easy data transmission - without communication interfaces such as IO-Link or Fieldbus protocols;
- Extends the process monitoring and diagnostics options through the output of color values and color similarity;
- Using IO-Link, up to 24 colors can be saved per identification task (job), saving resources and increasing the process flexibility;
- The sensor can be quickly configured correctly using the setup assistant in the SOPAS software, making the commissioning easier and increasing the process stability.
Applications
- Fast sorting of objects by color: e.g., components in the automotive industry and machine construction; containers and pallets in intralogistics; vials and beverage bottle lids;
- Mark and object positioning: detecting colored marks, labels, adhesive areas (splicing);
- Object sorting and separation: differentiation of objects, for example, components by color;
- Quality control: Thorough check of color tone and structure, for example, after printing, dyeing, or lacquering.
